History

Rewa has been the capital of the King of Baghel Dynasty. In 1618, Rewa Naresh Vikramaditya Singh made Bandhavgarh the capital of Rewa by abolishing the status of capital. And expanded and established it. From then till 1947 AD, Rewa was the capital of Baghel King.

The art and culture of this place was very rich, in ancient times this land was dominated by the Karchuli king for almost 12th century. Curchuli King built beautiful temples and monasteries. Later, during the reign of Baghel King, many beautiful buildings, temples etc. were constructed. Glimpses of the living here are seen in many ancient sculptures.

The boundaries of erstwhile Rewa state ranged from the banks of Yamuna to Amarkantak. The forests here were huge and dense. Many types of wild animals are found in these forests at the present time. After the independence of the country, Vindhyapradesh was formed in 1948 by merging several surrounding princely states, whose capital was made Rewa. Rewa Naresh Maharaja Martand Singh Judeo was made the head of the state.

The state of Madhya Pradesh was formed in 1956, in which Vindhyapradesh was merged. Rewa division consists of five districts Rewa, Satna, Sidhi, Singrauli and Mauganj. the divisional headquarters of this division is Rewa.

Hindus and Muslims have been living here for centuries, all in deep harmony with each other. The major festivals here are Diwali, Dussehra, Holi, Shivratri, Ramnavami, Basant Panchami, Eid, Bakrid etc., all join each other’s festival.
